This one went through quite a bit of change during writing, but turned out pretty well, I hope. A few details were replaced several times but the main narrative beats were settled quite early on, which helped things along, considering this is one of three entries for the compendium I wrote. That said, of the three, this took most effort on my part, due to driving a bit too off course with regard to the narrative feel (it was originally much more melodramatic). I think and hope the other two (to be shared at a later stage) turned out better for it, though.

The Gravediggers - Major Grant Vargus

'During the closing weeks of the war of liberation in Llael in 612 AR, Khadoran soldiers learned to fear the sound of running warjacks. Those who encountered then-Captain Grant Vargus came to realize nothing could stop the onrushing tide of steel if he was at its head. Many a battle was as much as concluded with one inctricately planned and deftly executed pinpoint strike.
It was not always like this for the once unassuming son of Thurian entrepreneurs. As a young man, the soft-spoken Grant Caswall Vargus was more comfortable with a pen or book in hand as opposed to any wepaon. Being the second son in a well-to-do business-owning family with connections across the spectrum of Cygnaran social and industrial circles meant he had no real destiny. Since his brother was to inherit the family business, Grant himself would no doubt be shuffled off to some office apprenticeship after finishing his university education...'
